12/17/08 - Bike Patrol Information
The website now has a section dedicated to our Bike Patrol efforts. We are affiliated with IMBA's Bike Patrol program. Find out more information in our new section.

11/13/08 - Castlewood Trail Steward Needed
GORC is taking applications for a new Trail Steward in Castlewood State Park. Sam Mitchell has done this since 1994, and wants to move to Batchtown, IL and take up new duties.

--Trail Stewards develop good communications with the Park Superintendent, and the people associated with maintenance, planning, and development.
--Stewards must be members, and have good relations with the GORC board and membership, and keep them informed about their work.

--Stewards should use the trails often.

--The work effort is to make and carry out plans for work days, and possible new trails or features.

(This position is filled).

11/23/08 - Weekend Workday Report
Thanks to all that attended the ICCP (Indian Camp Creek) workday. A job well done with 30 people in attendance! We completed the connector trail across from shelter #6 and got a great start on the new ridge trail. Neither trail is open to ride yet, St Charles County has some minor dirt work to do on the connector trail transition. Still a lot of work to do on the ridge trail...
11/23/08 Creve Coeur Workday
Over 100?! folks made it out to the Creve Coeur Park (CCP) workday and finished the 1.2 mile loop. Everyone worked hard and had a good time. The benchcutting went smoothly since it was the easiest trail ever to work on - pure dirt with few roots and no rocks in sight. Many thanks to Momentum Bicycles and REI for providing the schwag.

11/11/08 - GORC Appreciation Day Slide Show
The GORC club has (and is currently) working very hard on all the local trail systems. Each year we put together a day of appreciation for all the volunteers.
Greensfelder County Park was the host this time around and over 30 people showed up. A strong crowd launched a noon-time ride covering both the DeClue and Dogwood loops.
Burgers and beer were on tap post-ride and eventually all the beer disappeared. The Schlafly APA and Stout complimented the GORC Cake and nobody was left out in the cold - we burned at "capacity" all afternoon long. Finally, a trials bike and wheelbarrow made the rounds but luckily no one got pummeled.
Here's to a great 2008! Cheers! Below is a short slideshow. Roll over the image to read the caption or click on it to view it larger.

11/13/08 - Berryman Race Recap
You can say I'm ahead of schedule now. Here's the write-up, a quick and dirty limited-edition, limited-edited op-ed piece by me. On the Blog...

11/12/08 - Middlefork Loop Map Added
There's a new epic loop gaining popularity. It's longer than the Berryman and smack in the middle of Ozark singletrack bliss. It's the Middlefork I'm talking about. Yeah, I know it's an out-n-back but some keen mountain bikers found a way to string a bunch of gravel roads almost back to the start. This loop is 38 miles long and packs a punch. After riding 25 flowy singletrack miles you're faced with an additional 13 mile ride home that includes a couple of taint-chapping climbs. This map base came from the Ozark Trail website and the directions were pulled from Route 66 Bicycles out of Rolla, MO.

11/20/08 - GORC-Related Digital Photos Requested
GORC is requesting anyone with digital photos of the club/members in action! This includes:

Please bring a CD or flash drive of the "raw" original images (not cropped or compressed) to any monthly GORC meeting.
We will have a laptop on hand to dump the images from your flash drives or CDs. The photos do not have to be recent, either.
The club is compiling all the images to archive and for potential use in brochures, flyers, the website, etc.
You can also email Lisa, our designer, at ltroehler at yahoo.com to arrange other alternatives to sending images. Please do not email photos without contacting her first.
Thanks, Matt

Where: Creve Coeur Park - Dorsett Rd. & Streetcar Dr.

GORC & St. Louis County Parks provide: Trail building tools, instructions on trail building, and safety guidelines
We hope to finish this phase on this workday. Please bring a friend. This is an all dirt trail with no rocks. We will be grubbing and bench cutting so the more help the sooner we complete this phase.
Indian Camp Creek
Saturday, November 22, we're having a workday at ICCP, and all interested people are invited. You don't have to be a mountain biker - the trails are also open to hikers, equestrians, and trails runners.
We'll supply the tools, lunch, and trail building instruction. Please bring something to drink/snack on during the workday, wear sturdy shoes (boots preferred), and bring your bike and gear if you want to ride afterwards.
Who: GORC peeps, friends, and trail users that aren't going to the Creve Coeur workday.
What & Where: Workday @ Indian Camp Creek Park. It's approx 7 miles North of I-70 on 40/61. (Turn left on Dietrich Rd roughly .6 miles after passing W.) We'll be meeting at shelter #6, NOT the trailhead parking lot.
When: Saturday (11/22/08) 9:00 til 1:00, with lunch provided by St. Charles County Parks. Please RSVP to the SCCP's office (636-949-7535) or through the WebTrac registration system on the parks website www.stccparks.org. or post here.
Why: To give yourself more trails to ride, and experience what it's like to build some sweet singletrack. We'll be trying to finish the connector that goes down the hill from shelter #6, and hope to start work on 1 of the 5 "fingers" of new trail that are planned.

11/6/08 - TWO WORKDAYS and the GORC
2008 Appreciation Day THIS WEEKEND ! ! !

Double workdays this Saturday, this time at Greensfelder and Klondike Park. Both begin at the usual time- 9 am. More info on the Greensfelder Workday can be found here, and on the Klondike one here.
The Greensfelder workday is particularly important. We have identified areas that are especially prone to damage an this will go a long way to making the Dogwood and DeClue trails much better places to ride.
and don't forget ...
GORC 2008 Appreciation Day THIS WEEKEND at Greensfelder Park
What is it?? This is when GORC thanks you, the volunteer, for coming to our workdays.
Once a year we try to come together for riding, food, and beer. BEER!

10/28/08 - Durango Trip Slide Show
As winter approaches, we look back at the awesome trip this past August.

10/14/08 - The Burnin' Was Here
This past weekend two GORC teams battled it out to score the 1st place single speed title. Teams LOL (John D, Larry K, Carey E.) and Council Bluff Tourism Board (Bryan A, Matt H, Mike B) rounded the lake 10 times over 12 hours with Matt, Bryan and Mike claiming victory. Other notable events include Chris Ploch destroying the previous best time and clocking in at an insane 59:59 and Mesa Cycles stepping up and using timing chips. I gotta say that the timing system was light years ahead of the dowel stick and proved quite robust.
The GORC bike patrol monitored the course and kept everyone safe from harm. Many voiced their thanks and felt reassured that the Bike Patrollers had their backs.
See you out there next year.

10/14/08 - Greensfelder Workday Cancelled
Due to a scheduling conflict, the workday for this Saturday to work on Declue maintenance is canceled. We will plan on doing this work on the November 8th workday.
However, St. Louis County Parks is still planning on having a lunch (Noon to 1) at Muckerman Shelter to discuss the "Share the Trail" program. They would like to have as many cyclists there as possible. This is a good chance to express your opinions on how the program is going. Please RSVP by calling 314-615-8822.
See you on November 8th.

10/7/08 - Berryman Race (unofficial) Map
Here's a map of the upcoming Berryman race Oct. 25 weekend. It's not 'official' as someone simply rode the route and marked it up on a contour map.
This 55 mile race is sure to snap your wrists and sear your knees as it encompasses the Berryman and parts of the OT. It will start and finish at Bass River Resort so I'm sure there will be an after-party.

A few choice photos from our Durango trip have been posted to the gallery. Check 'em out...
Durango Gallery
In a better-late-than-never move the web admin guy felt guilty enough after posting Durango live that he culled some of the best Winter Park photos, and over a year later, posted them up. Enjoy.

01/14/08 - Interactive Trail Locations Map & Forecast Posted
I discovered a sweet new Google Maps tool and ran with it. GORC now has an (in progress) overall and comprehensive map of the region's bike trails and parks.
Some features include:
- Icons related to the map highlight
- Clickable icons to display descriptions, links to the GORC or other applicable downloadable maps, and links to get directions to the site
- 4 modes of viewing, +map, +satellite, +terrain, +or traffic
- Ability to view the map in Google Earth
- Ability to move around map, zoom in, etc.
Look for it to expand in the coming weeks as new items are added. A new forecast mini-application has been added to the home page. This is for the benefit of all trail users and hopefully will aid you in your decision-making whether to ride the dirt or not.
